1480. Robert⁹ BURNHAM (child of Robert, #2960);[195],[195] born 2 Oct 1614 at Norwich, Co. It has been said, "Robert Burnham- The Emigrant - came to Ipswich in 1635, at the age of eleven years, in charge of his maternal uncle, Captain Andrews, master of the ship AngelGabriel. The vessel was wrecked on the coast of Maine, and a chest belonging to the three Burnham brothers, was thrown overboard and lost. In 1644, at the age of twenty, he removed to Boston, where he soon after married. In 1654, he became one of a company who purchased and settled the town of Dover, NH, and was the emigrant

ancestor of a numerous race of descendants, who still reside in that state. - Decendants of Robert of Dover, p.439."[246] "Robert was born in about 1614 in England to Robert and Mary (Andrews) Burnham. He was raised in England, and as a teenager began learning the carpentry trade. In the 1630's, Robert began working on his uncle, Robert Andrews, ship, the Angel Gabriel. His two brothers, John and Thomas Burnham also worked the vessel.

On 15 August 1635, the Angel Gabriel was shipwrecked off the coast of Pemiquid, Maine. Robert, his uncle, and two brothers all made it to shore and traveled to Ipswich, Massachusetts, where they settled for a short period of time. In 1644, Robert left and moved to Boston. He remained in Boston for about ten years, where he met and married Francis Hill. The couple purchased 200 acres of land in Durham, New Hampshire in 1654, and left Boston. Durham had been settled in the early days, around 1623. The Burnham property in New Hampshire was located in Oyster River, a small settlement in Durham. Soon after, the couple began having children and their family grew.

Oyster River was the scene of numerous Indian attacks in the early days of the settlement, including an August 1689 attack that killed Robert Hutchins, the husband of Robert Burnham's daughter, Sarah. The Indians held Sarah captive for a year before she was released. Nearly the entire settlement of Oyster River was destroyed, with 23 settlers killed and another 29 taken captive. A militia from Boston caught up with the Indians a month later, and marched 200 of them to Boston where most were hung and a few sold into slavery. In March 1690, the Indians again attacked Oyster River in what is known as the "Salmon Falls Raid." In that attack, 34 settlers were killed and 54 taken captive. these raids were part of a bigger conflict, the King William War, raging in the colonies between the British and the French/Indian alliance. On 12 June 1691, Robert Burnham died at the age of about 77 years old."[247]
