1. Thomas1 MARCHMENT; born between 1781 and 1786 at Chiseldon, Co. Wiltshire, England;[1] he may have married Ann (--?--) 25 Aug 1810 at Ealing, London, Co. Middlesex, England.[2]

He and Ann (--?--) appeared on the census of 1841 at Brookgreen Place, Hammersmith, London, Co. Middlesex, England; where Thomas (~55) was a labourer. Ann (~50), Eliza (26), William (24), Ellen (14), Eliza (13) and two other roomers were present. The children were born in Co. Middlesex, but Thomas and Ann were not.[3] He was a labourer in 1844.[4] He and Ann (--?--) appeared on the census of 1851 at 22 Caroline Place, St. Paul, Hammersmith, London, Co. Middlesex, England; where Thomas (70) a labourer born Chiseldon, Co. Wiltshire, Ann (60) born Co. Worcestershire, Eliza (35) a charwoman born in Hammersmith and described as 'deaf and dumb', and their granddaughter Sarah Ann (3) were present.[5]

Ann (--?--) was born circa 1791 at Co. Worcestershire, England.[6],[7] She died (Dec quarter) in 1868 at Kensington, London, Co. Middlesex, England.[8] She may have been Ann Skinner.[9]

    Eliza may have been mentally or physically impaired. She was described as 'deaf and dumb' in the 1851 census.[15]

2. Samuel Jasper2 MARCHMENT (child of Thomas1);[25],[26] born circa 1823 at Hammersmith, London, Co. Middlesex, England;[27],[28] baptized 12 Oct 1823 at Hammersmith, London, Co. Middlesex, England; where father was Thomas Marchment, and mother was Ann;[29] married Mary Ann Copeland, daughter of James Thomas Copeland and Sarah (--?--), 19 Aug 1844 at parish church, Kensington, London, Co. Middlesex, England; where Samuel (22) was a bachelor, labourer, and Mary Ann (18) a spinster. Witnesses were Moses Ditch and Sarah Copeland;[30] died "of typhoid fever... age 68" 12 Aug 1891 at Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada, at age 67;[31] buried at lot 19, sect 32, plot M, Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.[32],[33]

He appeared on the census of 1841 at King St., St. Paul Covent Garden, Westminster, London, Co. Middlesex, England; where Samuel (15) was a servant to William Turpin (25), Charles Gentry (15), servant, was also present.[34] In 1844, Samuel Jasper Marchment and Mary Ann Copeland lived at Early Street, Kensington, London, Co. Middlesex, England, at time of their marriage.[35] In 1849, Samuel Jasper Marchment and Mary Ann Copeland lived at Portland Street, Fulham, London, Co. Middlesex, England, at the birth of Samuel William, and Samuel Jasper was a labourer.[36] He and Mary Ann Copeland appeared on the census of 1851 at 4 Portland Cottages, Fulham, London, Co. Middlesex, England; where Samuel (27) was a labourer in Duckfield, born in Hammersmith. Mary A. (25), Mary A. (4) and Samuel (2) were also present.[37] He and Mary Ann Copeland appeared on the census of 1861 at 8 Worlds End Passage, Chelsea, London, Co. Middlesex, England; where Samuel (39) was a carman, and Mary Ann (37), Mary Ann (14), Samuel W. (12), George D. (10), James W. (5) and Emma (3) were present, all born Hammersmith, Co. Middlesex.[38] He and Mary Ann Copeland appeared on the census of 1871 at Ashley Cottages, Kensington, London, Co. Middlesex, England; where Samuel (48) was a coal porter, Mary A (45), George (19) also a coal porter, James (15), Emma (13), Sarah (4), and boarder James Copeland (77) were present.[39] He and Mary Ann Copeland appeared on the census of 1881 at 81 Latymer Rd., Hammersmith, London, Co. Middlesex, England; where Samuel J. (58) was a general labourer; Mary A. (55) was also present. Both born in Hammersmith, Co. Middlesex. Their son James lived next door at #83.[40],[41] He and Mary Ann Copeland emigrated in 1887 to Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada; from England with sons James and George.[42] In 1889, Samuel Jasper Marchment and Mary Ann Copeland lived at 826 Yonge St., Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada, as renters. George and James were present, all were labourers at eldest son's S.W. Marchment & Co.[43] In 1891, Samuel Jasper Marchment and Mary Ann Copeland lived at 912 Yonge St., Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada, George was present and both worked with S.W. Marchment. James had moved out.[44] He and Mary Ann Copeland appeared on the census of 28 Apr 1891 at St. Paul's ward, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada; where all recorded as born in England, Samuel J. and George were labourers, only Mary Ann could read and write. George was single.[45] He was ill with typhoid fever 14 days in Aug 1891.[46]

Mary Ann COPELAND[47],[48] was born in 1826 at Hammersmith, London, Co. Middlesex, England.[49],[50] She was baptized on 21 Apr 1826 at Hammersmith, London, Co. Middlesex, England.[51] She married James Weeks on 25 Sep 1897 at Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada; James was a lumber man, aged 71 yrs and a widower. Mary Ann was also 71 yrs, and a widow born in London, England to James and Sarah Copeland. George T. Marchment, her son, was witness. The service was Methodist.[52] She died of accute bronchitis on 31 May 1900 at 614 Yonge St., Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[53] Between 1892 and 1893, Mary Ann Copeland lived at 912 Yonge St., Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada, with son George after the death of her husband Samuel J. Marchment.[54] Between 1894 and 1897, Mary Ann Copeland lived at 910 Yonge St., Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada, where she was a caterer, and joined by son George. Mary stayed there until she remarried.[55] She lived between 1898 and 1900 at Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada; around the Yonge & Bloor Sts. area.[56] She was a butcher at her death in 1900 at 614 Yonge St., Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[57]

Middlesex, England;[61],[62],[63] died of epilepsy, and more recently neurasthenia (weakness, dizziness and fainting) 17 Sep 1917 at Ontario Hospital for Epileptics (Woodstock), Zorra East Twp., Oxford Co., Ontario, Canada, at age 66.[64]

    He was ill with epilepsy, at age 18 in 1869.[65] He emigrated in 1887 to Toronto, Ontario, Canada; with most of his family.[66] George lived with his parents until his father died in 1891, and his mother remarried in 1897.[67] In 1898, George Townsend Marchment lived at 14 Collier, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[68] In 1899, George Townsend Marchment lived at 64 Cumberland, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[69] Between 1900 and 1902, George Townsend Marchment lived at 36 Scollard, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada, with his brother James's family.[70] He appeared on the census of 1901 at Toronto, Ontario, Canada; where George (49, illiterate) and brother James W. (45) were teamsters, and James's wife Susan, and 7 children were also present.[71] He was a teamster, as was his brother James in 1901.[72] Probably after his brother James's death from a fall in 1905, which he witnessed, George was committed to the Epileptic Hospital in Woodstock.[73] He appeared on the census of 1911 at Lot4, Con11, Zorra East Twp., Oxford Co., Ontario, Canada; where George (60) was a patient at the Ontario Hospital for Epileptics at Woodstock.[74],[75]

4. Samuel William3 MARCHMENT (child of Samuel2, Thomas1);[101],[102] born 14 Mar 1849 at Hammersmith, London, Co. Middlesex, England;[103],[104],[105],[106],[107] married Catherine Beaver Spring 1868 at Kensington, London, Co. Middlesex, England;[108],[109],[110] married Augusta Alice Judd, daughter of Joseph Edmund Judd and Emma Martha Balaam, 6 Sep 1884 at Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada; where Samuel was an excavator, and Methodist, and Augusta was Baptist;[111] died 5 Mar 1928 at Santa Monica, Los Angeles Co., California, United States of America, at age 78.[112],[113]

He appeared on the census of Apr 1871 at 15 Warwick Terrace, Kensington, London, Co. Middlesex, England; where Samuel (23) was a coal porter, and Catherine (23) was present. The widow Harriett Adams (41), char woman, and her son Thomas (11), and Michael Cavanagh (70) a locksmith, and his wife Margaret (69) also lived there.[114] He and Catherine Beaver emigrated circa 1871 to Ontario, Canada.[115],[116] In 1871, Samuel William Marchment and Catherine Beaver lived at Barrie, Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada, intending to acquire land and settle there.[117] Between 1872 and 1876, Samuel William Marchment and Catherine Beaver lived at Orillia, Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada, for the births of their two sons.[118],[119] Samuel probably worked on the Northern & Northwestern and Midland Railways which were being extended north and west of Orillia.[120],[121],[122] He was a teamster in 1872.[123] He was a contractor in 1876.[124] In 1877, Samuel William Marchment and Catherine Beaver lived at 22 Borden, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada, where Samuel was a teamster.[125] In 1878, Samuel William Marchment and Catherine Beaver lived at corner Spadina Ave. & Bloor St., Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada, where Samuel was a contractor and gardener.[126] He lived between 1879 and 1880 at Hamilton, Wentworth Co, Ontario, Canada; where daughter Florence was born, and shortly died. Samuel recorded a contractOr.[127],[128] He was the operator of an out-house cleaning business with James James between 1881 and 1882 at Excelsior Odorless Excavating, 19 & 50 Adelaid St., Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[129] He and Catherine Beaver appeared on the census of 13 May 1881 at 63 Duchess, St. Thomas's Ward, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada; where Samuel (31) was an excavator, and Kate (30), John A. (9), and Sidney (5) were present, and the family was Methodist.[130] In 1883, Samuel William Marchment and Catherine Beaver lived at 103 Jarvis, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[131] He was the owner/operator of the 'odourless excavation' and contracting and construction business, including manure removal between 1883 and 1891 at SW Marchment & Company, 9 Queen St. East, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[132] In October of 1883, Samuel's wife Kate died.[133] In 1884, Samuel William Marchment lived at 91 Scollard, Yorkdale, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[134] Samuel was a member of several organizations: eg. Royal Arcanum - Canada Council No. 612 Toronto, and the Sons of England - Warwick Lodge as of 1885. He transferred to the Somerset Lodge in 1894.[135],[136] In 1885, Samuel William Marchment and Augusta Alice Judd lived at 132 Victoria, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[137] Between 1886 and 1887, Samuel William Marchment and Augusta Alice Judd lived at 717 Yonge, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[138] Between 1888 and 1890, Samuel William Marchment and Augusta Alice Judd lived at 826 Yonge St., Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada, and were joined by Samuel's parents and two brother's families (at the address).[139],[140] He and Augusta Alice Judd appeared on the census of 1891 at Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada; where the family was Baptist, and Samuel (41) was a contractor building 3 houses at the time, employing 10 people. Augusta (25), Sidney (15), Ethel (5) and Muriel (3) were also present.[141] Between 1891 and 1892, Samuel William Marchment and Augusta Alice Judd lived at 848 Dovercourt Rd., Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada, joined by Gussie's mother and siblings. The city directory also shows S.W. Marchment & Co. then used both 9 Queen St. E and 912 Yonge St.[142],[143] In 1893, Samuel William Marchment and Augusta Alice Judd lived at 412 Delaware, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[144] He was the owner/operator of the 'odorless excavation' business, but expanded into manure, compost and ash transport and eventually landscaping between 1893 and 1906 at S.W. Marchment & Co., 103 Victoria St. and 910 Yonge St. (up to 1901), Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[145] Between 1894 and 1895, Samuel William Marchment and Augusta Alice Judd lived at 22 Gwynne, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada, including Gussie's mother and brother.[146] Between 1896 and 1897, Samuel William Marchment and Augusta Alice Judd lived at 66 River St., Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[147] In 1898 S.W. Marchment purchased the steam barge Gordon Jerry. She delivered manure to fruit farmers in Niagara until running aground in 1905, and/or burning in 1906.[148],[149],[150] Between 1898 and 1900, Samuel William Marchment and Augusta Alice Judd lived at 33 River St., Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada, joined again by Gussie's mother.[151] He and Augusta Alice Judd appeared on the census of 1901 at 19 Sultan St., Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada; where the family was Baptist, in a 7 room house. Samuel (51), Augusta (35), Ethel (15), Muriel (12), Harold 8), Mabel (5), and Norman (2) were present.[152] Between 1901 and 1902, Samuel William Marchment and Augusta Alice Judd lived at 19 Sultan, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[153] Between 1903 and 1906, Samuel William Marchment and Augusta Alice Judd lived at 1075 Queen St. W., Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[154] In 1906 Augusta and Samuel began living part of the year in California.[155] Between 1908 and 1928, Samuel William Marchment and Augusta Alice Judd lived at 489 Marion, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[156] Samuel and Gussie travelled to Ireland to visit the parents of son-in-law Robert Boyd Jr. in Coleraine, County Derry in 1908. There are several photos taken from the deck of the Lusitania. For their return trip, they departed from Liverpool on 5 Dec, and arrived at New York on 12 Dec 1908.[157],[158] He and Augusta Alice Judd appeared on the census of 1911 at 489 Marion St. W, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; where Samuel (62) was head of the family, a contractor, with Augusta (46), Muriel (23) and her husband Robert Boyd (26) a bookkeeper and daughter Margaret (2 mo.), Harold (18), Mabel (15), and Norman (12) were present. Daughter Ethel (25) and her husband Earnest Tregaskes (31) a bookeeper were recorded there (though they lived at 206 Pearson). All were Baptist except the Tregaskes who were Anglican.[159] Samuel and Augusta travelled overseas in 1914, returning aboard the Kaiser Wilhelm II, departing Southampton 20 May, arriving New York 26 May 1914.[160] He was running SW Marchment in 1918 at 133 Victoria St., Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[161] On 2 Oct 1919, Augusta and Samuel crossed into the U.S. at Buffalo, and completed information cards, describing thier last visit was in 1912, now visiting a friend in Los Angeles for 6 months, she was 5ft 4in tall, with fair complexion, brown hair and blue eyes, and he was 5ft 11in, hair light grey with grey eyes.[162] He was president and manager of Marchment Company Limited from 1921 to 1928 at 133 Victoria St., Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[163] In 1926, Marchment Co. employed two Canadian Pacific Rail sidings in Toronto, #366 near Bathurst and Front, and #469 near the Canadian National Exhibition.[164]

Catherine BEAVER; also known as Kate was born circa 1851 at Co. Buckingham, England.[165],[166],[167] She died with cancer of the uterus, having suffered 2 years on 18 Oct 1883 at Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[133]

    He appeared on the census of 1881 at 63 Duchess, St. Thomas's Ward, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada; when Sidney was 5.[173] He appeared on the census of 1891 at 38 Adelaid St, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada; when Sidney was 15.[174]

  • iii. Florence Marchment;[175],[176] born 8 Mar 1879 at Hamilton, Wentworth Co, Ontario, Canada;[177] died having suffered 16 days with tubercular menengitis 26 Feb 1880 at Hamilton, Wentworth Co, Ontario, Canada.[178]

Augusta Alice JUDD[179],[180] was born on 26 Sep 1865 at 8 Moselle Street, Tottenham, London, Co. Middlesex, England.[181],[182] She died at the home of her daughter on 25 Oct 1961 at 26 Humber Trail, Humber Crest, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada, at age 96.[183],[184],[185] On 26 Feb 1923, Augusta legally entered the U.S. for permanent residence at Port Huron.[186] She and Harold William Marchment appeared on the census of 1930 at Santa Monica, Los Angeles Co., California, United States of America; where Augusta (63), described as an alien to the US, and Harold W (37), a real estate salesman, divorced, and also an alien, was present.[187] In 1945, Augusta Alice Judd lived at 303 - 12th St., Santa Monica, Los Angeles Co., California, United States of America.[188] On 27 Apr 1945 Augusta was described while crossing into the U.S. at Niagara Falls as: nationality British, 5ft 2in, 145 lbs., hair grey, eyes blue.[186] Between 1947 and 1961, Augusta Alice Judd lived at 26 Humber Trail, Humber Crest, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.[189]

He and Susan Alice King appeared on the census of 1881 at 83 Latymer Rd., Hammersmith, London, Co. Middlesex, England; where James (25) a coal porter, Susan (26), and Walter J.S. (6), George E. (4), William A. (3), Sidney J. (1), and Sussanah (4 mos.) were present. They were next door to James' father Samuel at #81.[205],[41] He and Susan Alice King emigrated in 1887 to Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada; with their extended family from England.[206],[207] In 1891, James Walter Marchment and Susan Alice King lived at 38 McMurrich, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada, and was a teamster with S.W. Marchment. (45) and brother George (49, illiterate) were teamsters, son Robert (15) was a bread driver. Other children present: Ruth E.(14) , Edith R. (12) , Albert E. (10), Frank E. (8), Elsie M. (7), and Florence M. (5).[214] James died tragically in an accident: "Died From Shock -- James Marchment Was Thrown From His Wagon and Fatally Injured -- James Marchment, teamster, of 513 Preston Avenue, fell off a light delivery wagon last night and died as the result of the shock. With his son, aged 16 years, and his brother, he was driving home when the accident occurred. One of the rear wheels of the wagon slipped into a hole at a crossing and Marchment, the father, was jolted off. He was carried home, where he was attended by Dr. Conboy. Death ensued within a few minutes."[202]

Susan Alice KING was born on 2 Apr 1857 at West Drayton, Norland, Co. Middlesex, England.[215] She died on 23 Mar 1922 at 513 Concord Ave., Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada, at age 64.[216] As of 1857, she was also known as Alice Susannah King.[217]

  • ii. George Ellis Marchment;[225],[225] born 2 Dec 1876 at England;[226],[227],[228] married Emily Louise Ross 13 Jul 1898 at Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada; George was a Driver age 22, and Emily was 23.[229]

    Sometime after 1897, George moved out on his own, and drove for the Harry Web Co.[230] He and Emily Louise Ross appeared on the census of 1901 at Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada; where George (24), Emma L (26), and Gordon E (1) were present.[231] He and Emily Louise Ross appeared on the census of 1911 at 93 Cumberland St, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada; where George (34), Emlie (36), Gordon (11), Kenneth (5), Vilet (3), Jack (3), and Frederick (8 mos) were present.[232]
