Of course - but learn the good choices and the bad. And you don't have to always choose the good items-everybody has to indulge once in a while. Just be aware what constitutes a high-fat choice and act according to your personal lifestyle and your conscience. To keep within your daily target range, make an effort to eat lower-fat food items therest of the day.
I love fries and I want to be able to enjoy them pretty often - so I've learned to cook them without using fats or using very little. Now indulge often and never feel guilty. I don't eat fries now at restaurants. I know that they will not be low-fat. Because I'm eating fries often at home, I don't mind choosing something else when I'm out.
Choose baked, poached or broiled foods over home-fried, pan-fried or fried foods. Cheese and cream sauces are very high in fat so try to choose other foods. At a buffet, avoid the very shiny foods -- they are likely covered in oil. Think about the ingredients in the foods, as well as how they are prepared -- a cheese omelet can have up to 35 grams of fat, compared to only 14 grams in 2 large scrambled eggs with toast and jam.
Also, be aware of serving sizes. You may be allowed 5-10 servings of grains per day but one restaurant-sized plate of pasta can easily constitute four or five of those recommended servings!
What else are good choices - there's lots!!! Check out the handy chart on the next page. It will give you an idea of the better choice for various types of foods that are available at most restaurants.
